22 – Wednesday Nights
By ANGELA OLSEN
“That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.” (Genesis 2:24)
“Mom, when I get married, I’m only going to kiss my husband on Wednesdays,” my seven-year-old daughter stated quite matter-of-factly from the back seat. Of course I had to laugh, but I certainly didn’t do it out loud.
“Only Wednesdays?” I asked. “But don’t you think you’ll want to kiss him more than just one day a week? I kiss Daddy every day!”
“I don’t think so,” she replied with certainty. “Only on Wednesdays.”
I didn’t need to ask why Wednesday would be her day of choice. Ella has always known Wednesdays to be date night. Since before she was born, my husband and I have been very intentional about going out one night together every week. When we don’t feel like we’re connecting at all, we can look forward to Wednesdays when we’ll walk out the door together and know we have a few hours to focus only on each other. Sometimes we have fancy dinner dates, and other times we simply sit at a bookstore and flip through magazines. It really doesn’t matter as long as we’re together, free of other distractions.
It’s incredibly easy for our calendars to become so filled with all the demands of daily life that we forget to take time for the person we fell in love with, the one with whom God has united us. “A man…is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.” (Genesis 2:24) Regularly taking time to focus solely on your spouse allows you to develop and celebrate that unity, a unity that will continue to bind you through the journey God has uniquely designed for your family.
