26 – Trust Him

By MAXINE MOSLEY TOTOE

“Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” (Matthew 6:10)

I often catch my 4-year-old pulling a stool in front of the refrigerator in order to reach the top shelf where his favorite snacks are kept. Just like any child would, he often checks to see if anyone is watching before doing something he shouldn’t. To let him know I disapprove I have to hide the amusement on my face with a stern demeanor. I usually end up giving him a little treat after he says please. It’s sometimes difficult to say no to a kid who has had 9 surgeries, 2 of which have been open heart surgeries.

My husband Thomas and I had been married a little over four years before we had kids. I must say it was not for lack of trying, but we had been praying to be in God’s will. That is not the most comfortable prayer to utter. As humans, we like to be in control at all times. As Christians, we frequently prayed “your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven” (Matthew 6:10), yet little did we know what God’s will would entail for us.

After having our oldest son, Kyle, we experienced a few complications. As a nurse by profession, I was well aware of the challenges we would face with a little one who was diagnosed with a genetic disorder and I spent many nights praying his diagnosis would be different. I mean, this God spoke the earth into being so a missing chromosome is nothing for Him to overcome, right?

As it turns out, parenting Kyle has been the biggest challenge and blessing of our lives. We have grown in every aspect of our lives because of him. We have learned to love deeply, forgive quickly, and focus on the present because we know God holds the future.

As long as the desire of our heart is to remain in His will, we can rest assured that His hand is guiding our every moment. We live each day with eternity in focus but we also have learned to embrace the people God has placed in our lives to help us on this journey in the here and now. Pray that God’s will be done in every aspect of your life and watch His faithfulness sustain you.

TALK ABOUT IT

What are some areas that are especially hard for you to let go of control?

What are some times individually or as a couple where you surrendered to God’s will and were able to see His faithfulness come through in amazing ways?

In what ways do you want to give God more control?
